The French Press Coffee Maker

The French Press (also called a Press Pot or Plunger Pot) looks a bit like a lab breaker. It’s fitted with a tight plunger that strains and captures grounds as it is pressed to the bottom.

How To Use
Dump in coarsely ground coffee beans, add water, let steep (about 4 minutes) then press.

Pros
Because the grounds commingle with the water during the entire brewing cycle, more oils and solubles are released into the brew than with other methods. This produces a cup with a heavier body and a thicker mouthfeel. For this reason, the French Press is considered by many as the way to brew.

Shopping Tips
After you plunge your coffee, it will continue to steep (at a much slower rate). This can lead to overextraction, making the coffee taste bitter. So when buying a French Press, buy a size (2 cup, 4 cup, 8 cup) that brews only as much as you and your guests will drink right away or will pour into a thermos for later
